In the cool of the Roman Aqueduct Private access only
Intermediate and Advanced level (steep gradients)
On a bike, even when it's very hot, the air created as you move forward reduces the heat you feel.
Without requiring too much effort, electric assistance increases this ventilation effect. Going downhill gives us even more of this benefit.
Taking care not to stop in direct sunlight, we look for shady spots, cool corners and watering holes…
Here's a hike that's 100% fun, specially designed for hot afternoons :
At the height of summer, in the torpor of a Provencal afternoon, temperatures soar well above 30°Celsius!
But did you know that, just a short distance from the stifling heat of the city centre, there's a cool paradise just a few electric mountain bikes away?
A green oasis where water flows in winter and summer between the centuries-old ruins of the Roman Aqueduct... A magical place, shaded and difficult to access, dominated by high cliffs lined with poplars, willows and tamarisk. An unspoilt, unique place, a secret, wonderful place, so close...
So close, but so hard to find...
A clearing adorned with ivy and reeds, where we temporarily abandon our bikes to continue on foot:
A few minutes groping around in the living water, leaning on the limestone wall...
Climbing up a via ferrata track that plunges into the Infernet gorges at the foot of a steep canyon...
An explorers' walk through a postcard panorama...
A short aquatic hike and a refreshing dip
A few swims to beat the heat and stop time...
From our starting point, it takes around 50 minutes to reach the area around the Roman Aqueduct. Once there, the walking part, known as ‘canyoning’, takes 30 to 50 minutes.
So there's plenty of time to take in Cézanne's iconic landscapes, and to explore the emblematic local attractions of the Pays d'Aix on both the outward and return journeys.
On request, we can organise a wine-tasting session during the walk, glass in hand, accompanied by an aperitif, either in the vicinity of the Roman Aqueduct or in one of the places we pass on the way back to Aix.
